Newborn Session FAQs | Atlanta Newborn Photographer

Newborn

Are you looking for an Atlanta newborn photographer? Or, maybe we’re already working together and you have an upcoming newborn session with me (exciting!). Either way, I’m here to answer some of my most commonly asked questions for newborn sessions.

Have more questions than you see here? Feel free to contact me here.

How far in advance should I book?

Earlier rather than later! When looking for an Atlanta newborn photographer, I always recommend booking your newborn session during your second trimester. You’re typically feeling better then anyways, so leave your to-do list until then 😉 That way, it ensures you can get on my calendar and we’re all squared away before baby arrives. That said, if you did not book your newborn session that early, don’t hesitate reaching out to see if I still have availability.

My baby came early. What does that mean for my newborn session?

Because we book based on your due date (unless you’re scheduled for an induction, in which case we might work around that date), I typically earmark two weeks before and after your due date for baby to arrive. Babies are on their own schedule, so the answer is as simple as, we schedule photos after baby arrives, no matter when that is!

My baby is in the NICU, do we still get newborn photos?

Absolutely! And it’s so important that you do. If your little one doesn’t come home with you right away, we will simply schedule your session whenever baby is home and everyone feels settled. Don’t worry, we’ll still get all the wonderful photos just like you envisioned.

Can my dog [or other furry friend] join us for the session?

Of course! Furry friends are always allowed for in-home newborn sessions. I have two dogs of my own and understand that they’re a special part of the family, too. Give me some treats to help capture their attention, and I’m good to go! For these images, we’ll typically pile the full family onto the bed or on the floor. I even have a few tricks up my sleeve to get those adorable dog-licking-baby photos. I’ll just let you be the judge as to what will work best with your pet!

How do I prepare for my newborn session?

Ahead of our session, I’ll share all the details in a session guide with you which outlines everything from how to prepare, what to expect and what to wear. I share all the details I can so you know exactly what to expect on session day. My goal is to make the experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

Studio or in-home newborn session? Which is better?

Great question! The answer depends on two main things: 1) your preference, and 2) the availability of natural light in your home. Some moms prefer the studio look, or simply don’t want to have to worry about straightening up the house for a session. I always recommend a studio if the availability of natural light in your home is minimal in order to ensure we achieve the look you’re hiring me for. More on studio newborn sessions can be found here.

What if my baby won’t sleep?

I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve to get your baby to fall asleep; I’ve been referred during many sessions as a baby whisperer! That said, some babies are more alert than others, and sometimes having a stranger and a different routine can throw them off a bit. I’m very flexible, and if baby doesn’t want to sleep, we may start with the family photos first and do baby photos once he or she is settled and tired. However, I’m confident that white noise, heat and (most importantly) patience are key to a sleeping baby!

When will I get to see my images?

I do my very best to share a sneak peak photo with you within a few days of our newborn session. Depending on how busy I am, I try my hardest to share something within 48 hours. Your full gallery will be ready in about 2 weeks. I try to deliver your images to you as quickly as possible! I know how anxious you are waiting to see them! I am contractually obligated to deliver them within 30 days of our session date (unless due to qualifying unforeseen circumstances), so it will not be any longer than that.
