I always get asked by clients what to wear to their fall family photo session. What you wear sets the tone for your images. Choosing your family’s outfits can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! The most important thing to remember is that you should wear what makes you feel good because it will show in the final images!
Here are a few things to keep in mind when picking out outfits for your fall family photo session.
Fall Family Photo Outfit Do’s & Don’ts
- Keep colors neutral and soft: select 2-3 colors to start and build your outfits so that everything goes well together but isn’t too matchy-matchy. Mix neutrals with one or two accent colors. Neutral colors create a soft and elegant style, usually look good on everyone and will give your images a timeless feel. This still holds true for fall outfits. Instead of harsh and bold fall colors, opt for more muted colors like dusty green, khaki, tan, mauve, light olive, denim blue, etc. Say no to colors like red, kelly green, black, yellow, true orange, etc.
- Incorporate pattern & textures: Adding texture is really important, especially when only working with a few colors. An ivory shirt for dad can be paired with an ivory sweater dress for mom because the textures make them look different in color. When choosing a print, look for small and subtle patterns in soft or neutral colors. Stay away from loud patterns and say no to graphic tees.
- Keep location in mind: You don’t want to completely blend in with the background, and you don’t want to look out of place (like wearing a suit to an outdoor session). This holds true for outdoor portrait sessions in the fall. Keep in mind you’ll be amongst natural greenery in trees and grass and (hopefully) lots of fall colors, too. Also be sure to wear something comfortable so that you can take pictures not only standing up, but also sitting or lying down.
- Consider your home decor: Hopefully you’ll be printing these images to display on the walls of your home. So think about your decor style and colors inside your home so that the photos blend nicely with your existing style.
Most importantly, remember to relax! Choosing an outfit is a big task, but no matter what you’re wearing, you’re still going to get wonderful images that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
